EPS는 기업의 가치를 결정하는데 사용되는 전통적인 방법이다. EPS와 유사한 단어 : 회계수익과 보고된 수익, 는 평균발행주식수로 나눈다는 것은 제외.
 EPS 계산
EPS는 순수입에서 우선주에 대한 배당금을 차감한 후, 그것을 모든 발행보통주식수와 발행된 보통주식 등가물의 (가중평균된)합으로 나누어 계산한다(우측 그림 참조).
완전희석 주당순이익(Fully Diluted EPS ).
완전희석 주당순이익은 모든 보통주 등가물(전환 사채, 우선주, 워런티 및 권리)이 보통주와 함께 포함되었다는 것을 의미한다.
실제 기업의 가치를 충분히 반영하지 못하는 지표
보고된 수익은 기업의 가치를 충분히 반영하는 지표는 아니다.
EPS가 기업의 경제적가치를 신뢰있게 측정하지 못하는 6가지 주요한 이유 :
- 대안적 회계 방법이 채택될 수도 있다. FASB 또는 에 의해 요청된 변화와 자발적인 변화는 를 변경할 수는 있지만, 경제적 가치에는 영향을 미치지 않는다.
- 리스크는 제외된다.. 비즈니스 리스크와 재무 리스크는 둘다 연례보고서에서 설명되지 않는다.
- 투자 요구들은 제외된다. 예를들면 운전자본의 변화는 보고된 수익에서 고려되지 않는다.
- 배당 정책은 고려되지 않는다. 예를들면, 배당금의 감소는 EPS의 증가를 보여주지만, 사실은 가치중립적이다.
- 화폐의 시간적 가치는 무시된다. 보고된 수익에서 현재의 가치계산은 없다.
- 산업경제에서 서비스와 지식지향경제로 옮겨가고 있는 현재의 경제시스템에서 그 역할이 증대되고 있는 무형 자산
엔로니티스 (Enronitis)에도 불구하고, EPS는 아직도 많은 연례 보고에서 널리 활용되고 있다(엔로니티스 : 미국회사인 엔론처럼 분식회계를 통해 주가를 조작한 기업).
