Application of Competency to Teaching There are 3 elements of competency:
1. Knowledge
2. Skills
3. Attitudes
A competent employee is believed to have these three elements of competency.
There is a process known as competency modelling which is a huge task.
It usually works for employed workers. For students it requires a little modification.
Example 1: what technical and behavioral competencies are expected from students in mathematics course?
Example 2: One of the skill competencies could be "ability to interpret mathematical theories to practical life".
But it is not enough to identify competencies. We must also label the expected proficiency level from students.
The proficiency level is a competency scale which is normally described as:
1 = Novice
2 = Intermediate
3 = Advanced
4 = Expert
Think about at which level you expect your students to have the skills.
For instance the required proficiency level for ability to interpret theories could be 3 but the actual proficiency level of a student could be 1. There is a competency gap of 2, which implies focus on this student in this area.

More Than 40 People in a Class... It is obvious that a teacher in a class of 40 people will be lost.
Neither the time nor the circumstances are helpful. In such case the teacher should focus on the lesson rather than giving chances to the pupils to do the task themselves.

Developing Competency Based Teaching @Makhosi Khumalo: Competency is a critical knowledge without which employees cannot perform their jobs. The most difficult task is to identify competencies that are relevant to a job or job family and to assess the level of competencies of each jobholder.
In other words, it is important that the jobholder and his/her immediate supervisor are able to identify the actual proficiency level of the jobholder and compare it with the requirement.
This process cannot be effective at once. It requires repeated exercise.
I think you need to start at a pilot level before launching it at full scale. Benchmarking and some consulting may be helpful. In my view competency based education is not impossible, but could be difficult at first.

Initiating Competency Based Education and Training @Makhosi Khumalo: The difficulty lies in the lack of preparation of people to be trained as well as a motivating environment conducive to training.
@Belay Gezahegn: Knowing the environment very well and the problems which must be overcome, the people to be engaged in reacting to the situation should be properly motivated and themselves trained to handle the situations coming their way.

Competency Based Education and Training in Developing Countries Why is Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) so difficult to be implemented in poor/developing countries. What / how are we supposed to do it in order to make it effective?
