Leadership by Setting an Example
Many leadership styles such as paternalistic leadership, creative leadership, task-oriented leadership, laissez-faire leadership, leading by example work by setting an example for the others to follow. Creating a picture for the desired future can also be helpful.

Leading by Example
I agree that irrespective of the style exhibited by anyone in a leadership position, one outstanding principle is leading by example.
This principle cuts across different facets of life either in secular or in the ministry. If you are a pastor of a church, it is expected that you lead the people you are pastoring through your exemplary lifestyles. In the secular world, as a CEO of an organisation, your lifestyle naturally will command respect and compliance from the led if they are motivated and inspired by you.
In a nutshell, the principle is so important because it creates inspiration and motivation among the followers. This is why it is key in attaining success in leadership.

Example Setting by Those Who Lead
I think that leaders should be at the forefront of demonstrating their attitudes to those they lead. As the saying goes "actions speak louder than words". Most people like to see leaders/managers live by what they say. Eyes are focused more on what a person does than what they say. Performance results from actions, not words.

Leaders as Role Models
@Nji Mathias Bohkum: Yes, and when leaders "walk the talk," they earn respect and trust. Employees are likely to follow leaders who demonstrate integrity and consistency between words and actions.
I also agree with John Moses that the behavior and actions of a leader setting an example will inspire and motivate the followers to act in the same ways, whether that is accountability, excellence, innovativeness, team work, humility, or whatever. Slowly the leadership behavior will become company culture, increasing its effects.
An aspect that hasn't been mentioned yet is that leading by example also strengthens unity, because the leader is not just giving orders but he or she is actually participating, supporting, and empathizing with those who (try to) follow. This builds engagement and a feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself and teamwork.
