Six Sigma DMAIC and DMADV
Two main Six Sigma sub-methodologies are called:
DMAIC - Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control, and
DMADV - Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify.
They are both systematic, structured and fact-based methodologies, rather than relying on gut feeling or expert opinions.

DMAIC is an improvement system for EXISTING processes which fall below SPECIFICATIONS and need to be improved incrementally.
DMADV is also an improvement system which is designed to develop NEW processes and/ or products at Six Sigma quality levels. DMADV is typically used when a CLIENT or customer requires product improvement, adjustment, or the creation of an entirely new product or service. The application of the DMADV method is aimed at creating a high-quality product keeping in mind customer requirements at every stage of the process.

DMAIC PHASES
Here is some more information on each phase of DMAIC:

• DEFINE: the problem is being identified. Write down what you know at the start of the improvement effort. Seek to clarify facts, set objectives and form the project team.The business problem is clearly articulated along with the goal, potential resources, project scope and high-level project timeline. In any major project, all information is typically captured within a project charter document.
• MEASURE: choose the measurement system, collect the data, identify the gap between current and required performance.
• ANALYZE: search for, identify, validate and select the (root) cause(s) for elimination of the problem at hand.
• IMPROVE: identify, test and implement a solution to the problem or process.
• CONTROL: check and verify that everything went well and make sure the gains can be sustained. Monitor the improvements to ensure continued and sustainable success. Create a control plan. Update documents, business processes and training records as required.

	1 Six Sigma DMAIC Having been trained on the basics of Six Sigma DMAIC, I can confirm that indeed this methodology basically is for existing products, services and contracts that do not meet their key performance indicator / targets.

	1 Six Sigma DMAIC versus DMADV I agree DMAIC is well known and most used lean Six Sigma methodology to continuously improve existing products or processes. On the other hand DMADV is used for new processes and has more focus on involving customers in the process.

	4 DMAIC versus DMADV Despite the shared first three letters of their names, there are some notable differences between them: The main difference exists in the way the final two steps of the process are handled. With DMADV, the Design and Verify steps deal with newly designing or redesigning a process to match customer needs, as opposed to the Improve and Control steps that focus on determining ways to readjust and control the process. DMAIC typically defines a business process and how applicable it is; DMADV defines the needs of the customer as they relate to a new service or product. With regards to measurement, DMAIC measures the current performance of a process while DMADV measures against customer requirements/specifications and needs. Control systems are established with DMAIC in order to keep check on the process performance, while with DMADV, a suggested process model must undergo simulation via Design of Experiments (DoE) tests to verify efficacy. Remember DMAIC concentrates on making improvements to a business process in order to reduce or eliminate defects, preferably to a level of Six Sigma; DMADV develops an appropriate business process destined to meet the customers' requirements.

DMAIC and DMADV are both methodologies from Six Sigma, but they serve different purposes: DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) is used for improving existing processes. It's a problem-solving approach designed to identify defects or inefficiencies in an existing process, analyze the root causes, and implement solutions to optimize the process. The focus is on continuous improvement. DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify) is used for designing new processes or products. When a new process or product needs to be created or if the existing one is too flawed to improve, DMADV helps define requirements, measure performance, design solutions, and verify results to meet customer expectations. In summary, DMAIC focuses on improving existing processes, while DMADV is aimed at creating new, defect-free processes or products or reengineering defective processes.
