What are Alternatives for a Matrix Organization?
🔥 The discussions here raise the issue: if an organisation is embarking on several ongoing development programmes at one time, if programme management is not achieved via a matrix structure, then what is a preferred model?
In other words: what alternate ways of organizing large complex organizations exist, apart from the matrix organization?

Types of Sub-organizations that Form Within a Large Hierarchical Organization
In fact, the matrix organization is just one of several other types designed to solve problems of large hierarchical organizations such as:
1. A Network organization.
2. Program Management organization.
3. Various Committees.

If not Matrix... Then what are my Options?
@Bill Rainey: Consider yourself a lucky guy, since there are so many options to choose from.
Multi project management, multi program management, true portfolio management, focus area management, theme alignment, goal alignment, scope management, risk management, product portfolio management, etc, etc.
My more "meta answer" would be something like this:
"Any organization is the complex resolution of achieving alignment between many orientations, influences, goals, interests and positions. Stemming from programs, projects, departments, business units, staff, management, shareholders and all stakeholders not yet mentioned here. The only way success can be achieved is to know how to align and resolve all the beliefs and interest by having a mission resolving priority and a vision resolving conflict. Any structure allowing you to do so might work".
Something like that. A little "meta". Sorry for that. :-) R.
