The Title Logistician
Dyan Constantine, Other, Mexico

Overused/Misused Title.

In the recent past many persons have taken onto themselves the title of Logistician. However, it is my opinion that it is an overused title for many who have never delve deeply into the field of logistics and supply chain management. So what constitutes the title of the profession of Logistician? Logisticians analyze and coordinate an organization’s supply chain—the system that moves a product from supplier to consumer. They manage the entire life cycle of a product, which includes how a product is acquired, distributed, allocated, and delivered. Logisticians work in nearly every industry. The job can be stressful because logistical work is fast paced. Most logisticians work full time during regular business hours.
What is logistics? For businesses, the simplest definition of logistics is the flow of funds, goods, and information between source and consumer. Logistics is not simple. David Andries, Vice President of UPS Customer Solutions, explains that a more sophisticated way to think of logistics is: "implementing efficiencies across a business's entire supply chain that help them achieve their strategic goals."
A logistician has three areas of responsibility:
1. Manage the supply chain
2. Arrange transportation and storage of materials,
3. Transportation management.
A logistician is a certified professional who has completed specialized training and a certification program that focuses on the movement of materials. There are a number of international certification organizations, which are responsible for this professional designation. They include the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport and the International Society of Logistics.
Most logisticians work for either large shipping firms or international distribution companies. They are responsible for organizing, scheduling, and managing the distribution of materials. .
