Higher Education in Developing Countries
Teun Wolters, Member, Professor, Netherlands

A discussion on 12Manage showed that in developing countries in many cases weak governments fail to facilitate and arrange high-quality higher education for their people. The well-to-do can manage by entering private schools. For the low-income groups there seems to be a need for private initiatives based on high ethical principles and a motivation to make a serious difference in the lives of young people.
Based on available programmes in the West and a good preparatory programme which compensates for inadequate secondary schools, it must be possible to provide promising first degree programmes.
Perhaps 12Manage can be the platform to make a start. I look forward to additional ideas in this area. .
