Powerful and Effective Group Process Methods
Barrett W. Horne, Consultant, Canada

Liberating Structures provide simple, easy to use, but extraordinarily powerful group process tools.

I have been making very good use of many of the methods described at www.liberatingstructures.com. These simple but powerful group process methods can help any group reach deep consensus and alignment. More information can be found at www.plexusinstitute.org and www.groupjazz.com.

While each process is applicable to a wide range of contexts, I have especially found the 1-2-4-All, Speed Networking, Mad Tea Party, Celebrity Interview, Troika Consulting, Wisdom of the Crowd and TRIZ processes to be useful. Mind you, I have not yet tried all the Liberating Structures. But I have not yet been let down.

Perhaps the most significant 'ah-ha' for me has been the practice (now a fixed part of my work) to allow participants a minute or two (up to 5, depending on the questions and the process) to reflect silently before engaging in conversation. For the extroverts, this is often the most difficult part of a process, but it is vital to the introverts and has resulted in much richer conversations.
