Change Implementation Choices
Gary Wong, Consultant, Canada

The Negative or the Positive way of making change happen. What will you choose?

As a change sponsor, leader or team member, be aware that you can decide how you wish to have the change implemented.
Historically the "Burning Platform" approach has been widely used. The dominating paradigm is that "Pain drives Change." The task then becomes getting people to move by creating a strong sense of urgency to avoid pain. However, we’ve discovered that this approach also leads to unintended consequences. By focusing on the negative side of change, we observe behaviours that search for blame, put attention on yesterday’s cause, and weaken teamwork, relationships, and self-esteem.
Is there a better alternative? Thankfully, yes, and it does mean a paradigm shift. The shift is to focus to the Positive side of change and apply the practice of Appreciative Inquiry.
