Leader vs Leadership

Leadership goes beyond "the leader"

In reading through some of the posts on leadership, it seemed to me that the majority if not all the views make an implicit assumption that leadership is the domain of the few at the "top" of the organisation. What if we changed this paradigm to one where leadership exists at all levels of an institution/organisation? In the case of business organisations (and perhaps others?) one could then make a case for similar leadership behaviors at different levels in the organisation, although the detail of such behavior might be different at different levels. In this sense, one is beginning to talk about leadership as a community of practice rather than as being vested in a select few. Our dependence on the vision / charisma of the few at the top then becomes one of interdependence where leaders at all levels have an accountability for leadership excellence, rather than making it the sole accountability of those at the top (who after all are also mere mortals).
