Need to understand issues around bottom of the pyramid

As a person from a developing country it is interesting when visits a supermarket and a small shop to see the way manufacturers have packaged consumer goods and priced them targeting consumers of differing incomes. The issue of bottom of the pyramid has been a relatively new one to many manufacturers in developing countries like Kenya.In places like the slum areas of Kibera in Nairobi it is known as the "kadgo" economy.One would be keen therefore to investigate the extent of product differentiation that manufacturers have undertaken in order to reach their customers at the bottom of the pyramid.Furthermore, how may sales have performed after that differentiation? The telecommunication industry has been a very good example where sales have performed extremely well after reducing airtime cards denomination to smaller units.
