People are like Guitar Strings

Leaders take time learn how to work with people

What is the difference between guitar strings and the people that make up your work teams?
Let's see… Guitar strings are cold and wound tight and they will break under too much pressure. Sounds like someone you know? They also come in different thicknesses and are made of several different materials, some are even composites. We are still talking about guitar strings.
Each string is manufactured to produce a specific note based on a standard tuning model. This is where it gets interesting. I use a tuner to “find” the correct frequency of the note. Once I tune all six strings I still have to periodically retune them. Why? New strings go through a break-in period and stretch a bit. Older strings become fatigued. The climate and transporting also have an adverse effect on the tuning too.

Once you get those six strings in tune you end up with only one beautiful six-note chord. But anyone can strum across those six strings and play a single note. However, it takes two hands skilled to form and play patterns that will yield thousands of chords from those six independent strings. Leaders are those two skilled hands that understand the capabilities and tolerances of those who make up a team.
God has gifted every person for specific works. Leaders know their capabilities and help them find purpose and equip them to meet their full potential. By understanding how things influence one another within a whole, leaders build teams that are integrated with a diversity of skills to ensure a viable and robust ministry is birthed and sustained.
So you see people are a lot like guitar strings. They need to be prepared to meet their maximum potential and they need skilled hands to release their maximum potential. Leaders are a lot like guitar players.
