Vier Afstemmingsperspectieven

1. Strategie-uitvoering. Dit perspectief beziet de bedrijfsstrategie als drijvende factor voor zowel de keuzen voor het organisatieontwerp als voor de logica van de IT infrastructuur (de klassieke, hiërarchische zienswijze van strategisch management). Het topmanagement formuleert de strategie; het IT Management is slechts strategie-uitvoerder. [Pijl 1]

2. Technologiepotentieel. Dit perspectief bekijkt eveneens de bedrijfsstrategie als drijvende factor. Maar het involveert de formulering van een IT strategie om de gekozen bedrijfsstrategie te ondersteunen en de corresponderende specificatie van de vereiste IT infrastructuur en processen te steunen. Het topmanagement zou de technologievisie moeten bieden om de logica en de keuzen betreffende de IT strategie te formuleren die als beste de gekozen bedrijfsstrategie zou steunen. De rol van de IT manager zou moeten die van technologie-architect moeten zijn. Hij ontwerpt en implementeert efficiënt en effectief de vereiste IT infrastructuur die met de externe component van de IT strategie consistent is (werkingsgebied, bekwaamheden en bestuur). [Pijl 2]

3. Concurrentiepotentieel. Dit afstemmingsperspectief heeft betrekking op de benutting van nieuwe IT capaciteiten:

   • de impact op nieuwe producten en diensten (d.w.z. de business scope),
   • de impact op de belangrijkste attributen van de strategie (d.w.z. onderscheidende competenties), evenals,
   • het ontwikkelen van nieuwe vormen van relaties (d.w.z. bedrijfsbestuur).

   In tegenstelling tot de twee vorige perspectieven, die de bedrijfsstrategie overwegen als een gegeven (of als een beperking voor organisatorische transformatie), staat dit perspectief de wijziging van de bedrijfsstrategie toe via de nieuw opkomende mogelijkheden van IT . De specifieke rol van het topmanagement om dit perspectief te helpen slagen is dat van de business visionair, die formuleert hoe de opkomende mogelijkheden van IT en de veranderende besturingspatronen in de IT markt de bedrijfsstrategie zouden kunnen beïnvloeden. De rol van de IT manager is te handelen als een katalysator . Hij identificeert en interpreteert de IT  trends. Zodoende staat hij de bedrijfsmanagers bij om de potentiële kansen en bedreigingen vanuit een IT perspectief te begrijpen. [Pijl 3]

4. Serviceniveau. Dit afstemmingsperspectief concentreert zich op hoe een IT organisatie van wereldklasse binnen een organisatie gebouwd kan worden. In dit perspectief, is de rol van bedrijfsstrategie indirect. Dit perspectief wordt vaak bekeken als zijnde noodzakelijk, maar niet volstaand, om het effectieve gebruik van de IT middelen te waarborgen en om ontvankelijk voor het groeiende en snel veranderende eisen van de eindgebruikers te zijn. De specifieke rol van het topmanagement om dit perspectief te doen slagen is dat van de prioriteitensteller. Zij besluiten hoe de schaarse middelen, zowel binnen de organisatie evenals in de IT markt zouden moeten worden toegewezen (in termen van gezamenlijke ondernemingen, verlenen van vergunningen, minderheidsaandeleninvesteringen, enz.). De rol van de IT manager is er één van business leiderschap, met de specifieke taken van ervoor te zorgen dat de interne zaken slaagt binnen de operatie richtlijnen van het topmanagement. [Pijl 4]
