US GAAP is een afkorting van Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (Algemeen Aanvaarde Boekhoudprincipes) die door bedrijven worden gebruikt die in de V.S. zijn gebaseerd of die beursgenoteerd zijn op Wall Street. US GAAP bestaat uit een massief volume van normen en standaarden, interpretaties, meningen en bulletins die door de FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board), het boekhoudingberoep (AICPA) en de SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) zijn ontwikkeld.

US GAAP is een combinatie van gebiedende normen door beleidsorganisaties en toegelaten manieren om boekhouding te doen.

De normen van US GAAP zijn zeker gelijksoortig aan IAS. Maar zij worden ontwikkeld zonder enige input van buiten de V.S. US GAAP is zeer gedetailleerd, wijzend op de litigieuze omgeving in de V.S. die vraagt om steeds meer gedetailleerde regelgeving. US GAAP kan niet los worden gezien van de regelgevende interventie door de SEC.
