프레이밍이란 무엇인가? 기술

프레이밍 기술을 사용하여, 우리는 어느 한 분야의 의미에 관심을 집중할 수 있다. 사실 Fairhurst와 Sarr가 프레이밍이란 용어를 만들었지만, Amos Tversky와 Daniel Kahneman을 프레이밍 이론의 창시자로 봐야 한다.

합리적 선택이론(사람들은 항상 가능한 가장 합리적인 선택을 하려고 한다)의 중심개념과는 달리, 프레이밍 이론은 무엇이 어떻게 제시되고(프레임,frame), 사람들의 선택에 영향을 미치는가를 제시한다.

프레임은 추상적인 개념으로 사회적인 의미를 조직하고 구조화하는데 기여한다. 프레임은 청중들이 뉴스를 인식하는데에 영향을 미친다. 이러한 의제 설정의 형태는 이슈에 대하여 무엇을 생각하는가를 말해주는 것뿐만이 아니라(의제설정이론), 문제점에 대하여 어떻게 생각하는가를 말해준다.
 

프레이밍은 사람들이 다른 의미에 대하여 어떤 의미를 수용하도록 이끌어가는 커뮤니케이션의 質이다. 그러한 프로세스를 통하여 커뮤니케이션의 원천(source)이 정치적 이슈나 대중적 논란거리를 정의할 수 있고 구성할 수 있다.

프레이밍을 이해하는 것은 중요한 화제이다. 왜냐하면 프레이밍은 사람들의 사고의 내용에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있기 때문이다. 여러분들이 프레이밍에 반대할 수 있는지 알아보기 위하여 오른쪽 사례를 테스트해보라.

프레이밍은 나쁜 것일 필요는 없다. 그것은 사실 인간의 커뮤니케이션에서 피할 수 없는 부분이다. 우리는 어떠한 의미의 분야에서 사건이 제공될 때, 그 매체에서 프레이밍을 찾아낸다. 우리는 정치인들이 사건을 이렇게 혹은 저렇게 특징지우려고 시도할 때, 정치에서 프레이밍을 찾아낸다. 우리는 종교에서 그것을 찾아내고, 한 쪽이 원하는 결과가 있는 쪽으로 움직이려고 시도할 때 협상에서 그것을 찾아낸다. 마지막으로 프레이밍은 조직의 구성원이 그들이 살고 있는 세계에서 어떻게 이해하고 대응하는지에 대하여 심오한 영향력을 가진 조직의 지도자에 의해 사용될 수 있다. 프레이밍은 대부분 성공하는 리더들이 갖고 있는 기술이다. 흔히 가르쳐주지는 않는 기술이다.

Fairhurst & Sarr에 따르면(1996년), 프레이밍은 3가지 구성요소로 이루어져 있다.

1. 언어 (Language)
2. 사고 (Thought)
3. 통찰 (Forethought)

언어는 우리가 정보를 기억하고 우리가 상황을 바라보는 방식을 변화시키는 데 도움을 준다. 언어를 사용하기 위하여, 사람은 생각해야 하고 자신과 타인의 해석의 틀에서 반추해야만 한다. 리더들은 특정 환경에서 자연스럽게 프레이밍을 배울 수 있고 배워야 한다. 그렇게 할 수 있는 것은, 미래에 프레이밍의 기회를 예측하게 하는 것에 대한 통찰력을 갖는 것과 관련이 있다. 즉 리더들은 자연스워지기 위해서 계획을 세워야 한다.

프레이밍 기술 (Fairhurst와 Sarr, 1996년)

1. 은유(Metaphor). 아이디오 또는 프로그램을 다른 것과 비교함으로써 새로운 의미를 주기위하여.
2. 이야기 (Stories , 신화와 전설). 일화를 생생하고 기억에 남을 만하게 말함으로써 어느 한 주제를 프레이밍.
3. 전통 (Traditions, 종교의식, 의례 및 식). 조직의 가치를 확인하고 재생산하기 위하여 정기적으로 조직을 패턴화하고 정의하는 것.
4. 구호, 은어 및 캐치프레이즈 (Slogans, jargon and catchphrases). 기억에 남을 만하고 친숙하게 어느 한 주제를 프레이밍.
5. 인공물 (Artifacts). 물리적 물체(흔적,자취)를 통해 기업의 가치를 빛냄. 때때로 언어가 할 수 없는 방식으로.
6. 대조 (Contrast). 프레이민이 아닌 용어를 사용하여 주제를 묘사.
7. 회전 (Spin). 어떠한 개념에 긍정적 또는 부정적인 함축의미를 주기 위하여 그 개념에 대해 말하기.
