För Peter Senge (1990) förändra är att skapa ett lag och lärande är förändring. Således är det möjligt för organisationer att lära sig att förändra, därför att ”djupt inom oss är vi alla läraktiga”. I hans bok ”den femte disciplinen”, Senge vill ta bort illusionen om att världen skapats ut från skilda och icke relaterade styrkor. När vi ger upp denna illusion, kan vi bygga "lärande organisationer", organisationer där personer ständigt utökar deras kapacitet till att skapa resultat som de verkligen önskar, där nya och expansiva sätt att tänka föds fram, där kollektiva ambitioner släpps fria, och där personalen ständigt lär sig hur man lär sig tillsammans. Chefer måste lära sig att upptäcka de sju organisatoriska ”lärande handikappen och att använda” de Fem Disciplinerna som motgift för dem.
De fem disciplinerna av Senge
De fem delarna i modellen från Senge är:
Systemtänkande. Den förenande disciplinen (den femte) som sammanför de fyra andra in i en sammanhängande del av teorin och praktiserande.
Personligt Mästerskap. Personer måste betrakta deras liv och deras arbete såsom en konstnär skullebetrakta ett konstarbete.
Mentala modeller. Djupt inrotade antaganden eller mentala bilder som inverkar på hur vi tolkar världen och hur vi agerar.
Bygga upp en gemensam vision. Om det finns en äkta vision, så kommer personer att överträffa sig själva och lära in, och inte bara därför att de måste utan därför att de önskar detta.
Grupplärande. Lag-medlemmarna deltar i en verklig dialog. De stänger tillfälligt av deras antaganden.
Alla dessa fem discipliner måste upptas i ett i evigt sökande till att utvidga kapaciteten hos organisation till att skapa dess framtid. Lärande organisationer är de organisationer som kan gå utöver ett lärande som enbart bygger på överlevnad, till ett som utför ett generativt lärande: en form av lärande som förstärker deras kapacitet till att skapa.
