다섯번째 분야 - Senge피터 셍게(1990)에게 변화는 팀을 구축하는 과정이고 학습은 변화이다. 따라서 깊이 내려가면 우리 모두는 학습자이기 때문에 조직이 변하기 위해 학습이 가능하다. "The Fifth Discipline"에서 Senge 세상은 독립된,관계없는 힘으로부터 창조된다는 환상을 파괴하고자 했다. 이러한 환상을 포기할 때, 학습조직의 구축이 가능하며, 그 구성원들이 진정 바라고자하는 결과을 이끌어내기 위해 스스로의 능력을 확대해가는 조직이 될 수 있다. 그러한 조직에서는 새롭고 확장되는 사고방식이 배양되고, 집단적인 영감이 자유롭게 자리잡고, 함께 학습하는 방법을 학습하게 된다. 관리자들은 조직의 7가지 학습불능요인(learning disabilities)을 찾아내고 그 해결방법으로 5가지 규율을 활용하는 것을 알아야 한다.

Senge 모델의 5가지 구성요소

  1. 시스템 사고 (Systems Thinking). 다른 4가지 규율을 통합해주고, 하나의 이론과 실무 체계로 융합시켜준다.

  2. 개인적 숙련 (Personal Mastery). 사람들은 자신의 삶과 직업을 예술가들이 예술작품으로 간주하듯 해야한다.

  3. 세계관 (Mental Models). 깊이 배어있는 가정들이나 정신적인 이미지들로, 세계를 이해하는 방법이나 행동에 영향을 준다.

  4. 공유비전의 구축 (Building Shared Vision). 만일 진실된 비전이 있다면, 구성원들은 의무가 아닌, 필요에 따라 학습을 한다.

  5. 팀 학습(Team Learning). 팀구성원들은 진솔한 대화에 참여한다. 그들은 각자의 가정들을 유보한다.

반드시 채택해야할 5가지 규율들은, 조직의 미래를 창조해나가기 위해 필요한 조직의 능력을 확장하기 위해서 중단되서는 안되는 요청사항이다. 학습조직은 단순히 생존을 위한 학습을 뛰어넘어, 생성적(generative) 학습을 수행하는 조직이다. 생성적 학습은 창조능력을 강화시켜주는 학습 형태이다.
