O fundo da pirâmide (econômica) consiste nos 4 bilhão povos que vivem menos em de $2 por o dia. Para mais de 50 anos, as nações do banco de mundo, as fornecedoras, várias agências do dae (dispositivo automático de entrada), governos nacionais, e, organizações civis tudo da sociedade têm feito ultimamente seu mais melhor, mas eram incapazes de eradicate a pobreza.


Ciente deste fato frustrar, C.K. Prahalad começa seu livro: “The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid” com um proposition simples contudo revolucionário: Se nós pararmos de pensar dos pobres como vítimas ou como um burden e começarmos as reconhecer como empreendedores resilient e creativos e consumidores valor-conscious, um mundo novo inteiro da oportunidade abrirá acima.

Prahalad sugere que quatro bilhão pobres podem ser o motor do círculo seguinte do comércio e da prosperidade globais, e pode ser uma fonte das inovações. Servir aos clientes do Bottom of the Pyramid requer que as empresa grandes trabalham collaboratively com organizações civis da sociedade e governos locais. Antes de seu livro 2005, Prahalad publicou dois artigos a respeito deste framework sobre aliviar a pobreza:
