Tom Peters和Bob Waterman的“卓越管理的八个属性”阐述于他们的那本大名鼎鼎的管理经典: 《追求卓越》(In Search of Excellence》)。 这本书的理论基础是麦肯锡的7-S模型
 

Eight Attributes of Management Excellence[卓越管理的八个属性]

  1. 崇尚行动。
  2. 贴近顾客。
  3. 自主创新。
  4. 以人助产。
  5. 价值驱动。
  6. 不离本行。
  7. 精兵简政。
  8. 宽严并济。

根据Peters和Waterman,最后一条属性(宽严并济)是对前面七条属性的总结。 “宽严并济的本质就是要实现企业的高度集中与员工的最大化自治共存。。。 遵循宽严并济原则的企业一方面控制严格, 另一方面,又允许(事实上是鼓励、坚持) 普通员工的自治和创新活动”。


在2001年所做的访谈之后,Peters认为还应该再加入第九条属性,即

  1. 追求理想、自由与速度。
