غالبا ، يتطلّب خلق للقيمة و تغير فعال . يستنتج جون كوتّر في كتابه قوى التغيير: كيف تختلف القيادة عن الإدارة (1990) ، حيث توجد ثمانية أسباب تشرح لماذا لا تنجح الكثير من عمليات التغير :

السماح للكثير من التعقيد.

فشل بناء إئتلاف جوهري.

غياب فهم الحاجة للرؤية الواضحة.

فشل التواّصل مع الرؤية بوضوح .
-
السماح لاعاقة الطرق ضدّ الرؤية.
-
لا يوجد تخطيّط للنتائج قصيرة المدى ولا يتم تحقّيقها.
-
ادعاء النصر مبكرا.
-
فشل ارساء التغيرات داخل ثقافات المنشاة.
نموذج اطوار التغير
لكى نمنع حدوث هذه الاخطاء ، فقد ابتدع كوتّرأطوار التغير التالية. التى تتألّف أيضا من ثمانية خطوات:

أسّس حس الضروريات.
-
ابتدع إئتلاف.
-
طوّر رؤية واضحة.
-
شارك بالرؤية.
-
فوّض الناس بالعوائق واضحة.
-
وفر الفوز قصير المدى.
-
عزّز وحافظ على التحرّك.
-
ارسى بالتغير.
وفقا لكوتّر ، فان اتباع أطوار التغير الثمانية في التسلسل المناسب اعلاه.
