일본의 품질관리 통계학자인 kaoru Ishikawa의 특성요인도는 하나의 사건, 문제 또는 결과물의 원인을 확인하고 정리하기 위해 팀에서 사용될 수 있는 시각적인 기법이다. 특성요인도는 중요성 또는 세부적인 수준과 주어진 결과에 따라 원인들간의 위계구조적인 관계를 시각적으로 보여준다. 특성요인도는 Ishikawa 도표라고도 불린다..
 

특성요인도의 유래. 역사

특성요인도는 일본에서 품질관리의 전문가로 높은 인정을 받고 있는 도쿄 대학의 교수인 Kaoru Ishikawa에 의해 개발되었다. 그는 1943년에 Kawasaki 社의 엔지니어들에게 어떻게 복잡한 요인들을 문제를 이해하는데 도움이될 수 있게 관련지을 수 있는지를 설명하기 위해 특성요인도를 처음 사용하였다.

• 팀 노력에 있어 복잡한 문제에 집중. 비교: 8D 문제 해결
• 특정한 결과, 문제, 또는 상태에 대한 모든 원인과 근원을 확인한다.
• 특정한 프로세스나 결과에 영향을 미치는 요인들간의 상호관계를 분석하고 연관시킨다.
• 수정조치를 취한다.

특성요인도 작성 단계. 프로세스

1. 미팅의 목적을 설명한다. 분석대상이 되는 문제 또는 결과를 확인하고 분명히 진술하며 동의한다.

2. 모두가 볼 수 있는 화이트보드나 플립챠트를 준비한다. 수평이 되는 축이 있는 도표의 오른 쪽에 문제 또는 결과를 포함하는 박스를 그린다.

3. 브레인스토밍 회의를 지휘하십시오. 처음 작성할 때 주요한 가지를 위해 다음의 카테고리를 사용할 수 있다.
   • 서비스 산업 : 8 P : 사람, 제품/서비스, 가격, 프로모션, 정책, 프로세스, 절차, 장소/ 플랜트/기술.
   • 제조산업 : 6M : 인력, 방법, 측정, 기계, 물자, 대자연(환경).
   • 예를들면 다음과 같은 질문을 통해 위의 카테코리를 사용한다 : 문제에 영향을 미치거나 원인이 되는 사람과 관련된 문제는 무엇인가?

4. 조사하려는 결과에 기여하는 주요 원인을 확인한다. 이것은 행해질 수 있어 Pareto 분석 (80/20의 규칙) 또는 Root Cause Analysis [근원분석]를 적용한.

5. 이러한 주요한 원인은 특성요인도의 하위 가지의 레이블이 된다.

6. 각각의 주요한 하위 가지에 대한 특정한 요인을 확인한다. 다음과 같은 질문을 한다 : 이러한 원인이 발생하는 이유는 무엇인가?
7. 점점 더 상세한 수준으로 원인을 확인하고 관련된 원인 또는 카테고리내에서 원인들을 계속 구성한다.
8. 특성요인도를 분석한다.
9. 특성요인도에 따라 행동한다. 문제의 원인을 제거한다. 이것을 위한 일반적인 체계적인 접근은 Deming Cycle [데밍 사이클] 또는 RACI 챠트이다.

특성요인도의 강점. 이점

• 단지 분명하고 명백한 하나의 원인보다는 모든 가능한 원인을 찾거나 고려하는데 도움이 된다.
• 구축한 방식으로 문젠제 또는 품질 특성의 근원을 결정하는데 도움이 된다.
• 그룹 참여를 독려하고 프로세스에 대한 그룹지식을 활용한다.
• 불만 또는 무관한 토론 없이 문제의 원인에 집중할 수 있도록 해준다.
• 인과관계를 도식화하는데 질서정연하고 이해하기 쉬운 형태를 제공해준다.
• 모든 사람들이 작업에 포함되는 요인과 그것들이 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 학습하는데 도움을 줌으로써 프로세스에 대한 지식을 증가시켜준다.
• 충분한 정보가 부족한 확장된 연구영역을 확인시켜준다.

특성요인도의 한계. 단점

• 많은 원인과 문제들이 상호연관되어 있는 매우 복잡한 문제에는 특별히 유용하지 않다.

특성요인도의 가정. 조건

• 하나의 문제는 제한된 수의 원인으로 구성되어 있으며 상위의 원인은 다른 하위원인들로 구성되어 있다.
• 이러한 원인들과 하위원인을 구별하는 것은 문제를 다루는데 있어 유용한 첫번째 단계이다.
