Michael Hammer와 Glenn Mangurian는 1987년"The changing value of communications technology"이라는 논문에서 정보기술의 가치에 대하여 생각하는 데 활용될 수 있는 영향평가모델을 소개했다.

Impact/Value 모델의 수직축

• 시간(Time) : 특히 시간의 압축(time compression)이 중요하다.
• 거리(Distance) : 특히 지리적인 제한을 극복하는 것이 중요하다.
• 관계(Relationships) : 때때로 조직적 관계는 재정의될 수 있다.

Impact/Value 모델의 수평축

• 효율성은 일을 올바르게 하는 것이다. 예 : 생산성 증가.
• 효과는 올바른 일을 하는 것이다. 예 : 더 나은 경영관리.
• 혁신은 새로운 것을 하는 것이다. 예 : 제품과 서비스의 개선.

대안적으로 정보기술의 이점은 다음과 같이 분류될 수 있다.
