인적자본지수는 인적자본과 주주가치의 상관관계 산출하기 위하여 사용되는 Watson Wyatt의 방법론이다.

Watson Wyatt는 어떠한 인적자원 관행과 방침이 주주의 가치에 가장 큰 상관관계가 있는 지를 정확히 계량화하는 측정방법을 개발하였다.

단일 인적자본지수 점수를 각각의 조사대상 기업에 부여하는 측정방법을 사용함으로써 기업들이 결정적인 결과를 전달하게 해준다. 우수한 인적자원을 보유하고 활용하는 곳은 주주가치가 더 높았다.

이를테면 인적자본지수는 만일 한 조직이 인적자원관리를 잘 수행하고 있으면, 주주의 수익 또한 더 좋아진다는 것을 보여준다.

인적자본지수 공식

기업들의 응답은 시장가치, 3~5년간 총주주수익(TRS), Tobin의 Q 등을 포함한 객관적인 재무측정치들과 매치된다. Tobin의 Q는 물리적 자산을 초과하는 가치를 창출하는 조직의 능력을 측정하는 경제학적 비율이다. Standard and Poor's의 데이타베이스의 공용 데이터는 필요한 재무정보에 접근하는데 사용된다.

인적자본 관행과 가치창출의 관계를 조사하기 위하여, 일련의 다중회귀분석이 행해진다. 이 분석을 통해 기업의 인적자본 관행의 효과와 주주의 가치창출간의 명확한 관계를 명백히 확인한다. 30개의 핵심 인적자원 관행들은 시장가치에서 30% 증가되는데 연관되어 있다. 개별기업별로 총HCI 점수를 계산하고, 결과는 0점에서 100점까지의 범위내에서 나타낸다. HCI 점수가 0점일 경우 인적자본관리가 가장 부실하다는 것을 나타내고, 100점은 가장 이상적인 점수이다.
