요약

2002년에 출간된 Primal Leadership (Richard Boyatzis, Annie McKee 공저)에서 Goleman은 6가지의 리더십 스타일을 소개한다. 6가지 리더십 스타일을 제대로 이해하기 위하여 먼저 반향(resonance)에 대한 인간의 커뮤니케이션/상호작용 개념을 이해해야 한다.


리더는 반향을 불러 일으킨다.

Goleman의 관점에서 보면 좋은 리더는 반향을 일으키기 때문에 효과적이다.


반향은 라틴어 낱말 resonare에서 온다. 다시 소리를 만든다는 의미이다. 효과적인 리더는 다른 사람의 감정을 조율하고 그들을 긍정적인 감성적 방향으로 움직이게 한다. 효과적인 리더들은 자신의 가치, 방향 및 우선순위에 대하여 확실하게 말하고 주위 사람들의 정서에 반향을 일으킨다. 효과적인 지도자의 안내에 따라, 사람들은 상호 안정감을 느낀다. 반향은 높은 수준의 감성지능 (자아인식, 자기 관리, 사회적인 인식 및 관계 관리)를 가진 사람들에게 자연히 온다 그러나 지적인 측면을 또한 포함한다.


6가지 방식으로 반향을 일으킬 수 있으며 6가지 리더십 스타일이 된다. 일반적으로 가장 효과적인 리더들은 다양한 스타일에 따라 행동할 수 있고 상황에 따라 능숙하게 다양한 스타일로 변경할 수 있다.

리더의 특성

고무시킨다. 자신의 비전을 믿는다. 감정이입적이다. 사람들의 노력이 꿈에 기여하는 방법과 이유를 설명한다. 듣는다. 사람들이 자신의 강점과 약점을 확인하도록 돕는다. 카운슬러. 격려한다. 위임한다. 조화를 촉진시킨다. 친근하다. 감정이입적이다. 도덕성을 높인다. 갈등을 해결한다. 훌륭한 청취자. 팀 노동자. 협력자. 영향력 행사자(Influencer). 성취욕이 매우 강함. 높은 자기 기준. 주도적이다. 협력과 공감력이 낮다. 성급함. 세세하게 관리한다. 숫자 지향적이다. 지휘적이다. "내가 그렇게 말했으니 그렇게 하시오". 위협적이다. 단단한 통제한다. 세심하게 모니터링. 불협화음 창조. 모든 사람의 분위기를 어지럽힌다. 재능을 쫓아낸다.

반향을 일으키는 방법

리더는 사람들을 공유된 꿈으로 움직이게 한다. 사람이 원하는 것과 조직의 목표와 연결한다. 사람들 각각을 연결시킴으로써 조화를 창출한다. 사람들의 투입을 평가하고 참여를 통하여 몰입을 이끌어낸다. 도전적이고 흥미로운 목표를 실현한다. 비상사태에 명확한 방향을 제시함으로써 두려움을 감소시킨다.

변화가 새로운 비전을 요구할 때. 또는 명확한 방향이 필요할 때. 급격한 변화. 역량있고 동기부여된 직원들이 장기적인 능력을 키우며 성과를 개선할 수 있도록 돕는다. 팀의 균열을 치유한다. 힘든 시기에 동기부여한다. 또는 유대감을 강화시킨다. 지원 또는 합의를 구축한다. 또는 직원들로부터 가치있는 투입물을 얻는다. 동기부여되고 역량있는 팀으로부터 고품질의 결과를 얻는다. 판매. 중대한 위기에서. 또는 문제 직원에. 급박한 조직의 방향전환을 시작한다. 전통적인 군대.
