Machtsprocessen zijn overal aanwezig, complex, en vaak vermomd in onze maatschappij. De Bases van Sociale Macht van French
en Raven is een theorie die vijf (zes) bases (basissen) of bronnen
identificeert van sociale (organisatorische) macht:
Macht om te belonen. Deze vorm is gebaseerd op de gepercipieerde capaciteit om positieve of negatieve gevolgen te realiseren .
Dwingende macht. Dit is de gepercipieerde mogelijkheid om diegenen te straffen die zich niet conformeren aan bepaalde ideeën of eisen.
Legitieme macht (organisatorische autoriteit). Deze vorm is gebaseerd op de perceptie dat iemand het recht heeft gedrag voor te schrijven vanwege diens verkiezing of benoeming in een positie van verantwoordelijkheid. Ook genoemd Normatieve Macht. Vergelijk: Organogram.
Referentiële macht. Dit is macht door associatie met anderen die macht bezitten.
Macht op basis van deskundigheid. Dit type is gebaseerd op het hebben van onderscheidende kennis, expertise, bekwaamheid of vaardigheden.
Gelijksoortig aan 5: Informatie macht. Deze vorm is gebaseerd op het controleren van informatie welke andere mensen nodig hebben om een belangrijk doel te bereiken.
De Theorie van Vijf Bases van Sociale Macht begint met de veronderstelling dat macht en invloed relaties tussen minstens twee agenten impliceren. De theorie stelt dat de reactie van de ontvangende agent de nuttigste focus is om fenomenen van sociale invloed en macht te verklaren.
French and Raven onderzochten het effect van macht welke ontstond uit de diverse bases van aangetrokken worden door en weerstand bieden tegen het gebruik van macht. De aantrekking en de weerstand zijn de gevoelens van de ontvanger jegens de agent die de macht gebruikt. French en Raven concludeerden dat het gebruik van macht uit hoofde van de diverse basissen verschillende gevolgen heeft.
Dwingende macht vermindert bijvoorbeeld typisch de aantrekkelijkheid en veroorzaakt hoge weerstand. Terwijl de macht om te belonen juist de aantrekkelijkheid verhoogt en minimale niveaus van weerstand creëert.
French and Raven concludeerden ook dat „hoe legitiemer de dwang is [wordt waargenomen te zijn], hoe minder weerstand en verminderde aandacht deze zal veroorzaken“.
