La Leadership di Livello Cinque è basata sull'idea che il rispetto degli altri, l'altruismo dei leader e un forte impegno a raggiungere i risultati, aiutano a prendere il meglio dai subalterni. I leader del Livello 5 sono una paradossale miscela di feroce volontà e umiltà personale. Essi sono testardi e spietati. Tuttavia sono umili. Sono ambiziosi nei confronti della loro azienda e raramente permettono che il loro ego sia un ostacolo per il successo della loro organizzazione. Benchè compiano grandi cose per le loro organizzazioni, attribuiscono le loro realizzazioni straordinarie alle loro persone, a fattori esterni e al puro caso. I leader del Livello 5 guidano con l'aiuto di gente disciplinata, con pensieri disciplinati e con azioni disciplinate.

Questo metodo funziona apparentemente ogni volta che viene provato. È più concentrato sul carattere che sulla competenza. Un alto livello di competenza non è assolutamente richiesto per avere successo, ma il carattere non è negoziabile.
