De Brainstormmethode is een semi-gestructureerde creatieve groepsactiviteit, die meestal in ad hoc vergaderingen wordt gebruikt om nieuwe ideeën voor innovatie of verbetering te vinden. De leden van de groep worden aangemoedigd om ideeën over een probleem naar voren te brengen, alsmede oplossingen voor deze problemen, om op deze manier zoveel mogelijk ideeën te genereren, ook al zijn die niet altijd bruikbaar. Het idee achter brainstorming is, dat een groep mensen een hoger (synergie) niveau van creativiteit kan bereiken dan de som der deelnemers afzonderlijk.

De Regels van Brainstormen

Drie belangrijke regels voor een succesvolle brainstormsessie zijn:

1. De deelnemers moeten worden aangemoedigd om zoveel mogelijk ideeën naar voren te brengen, hoe vreemd deze dan ook lijken (er bestaan geen slechte ideeën).
2. Tot het einde van de sessie zou er geen oordeel moeten worden gegeven over een idee. Hetzij negatief of positief.
3. De deelnemers moeten worden aangemoedigd om op ideeën van elkaar voort te bouwen, waarbij zij onwaarschijnlijke combinaties maken en elk idee in onverwachte richtingen ontwikkelen.

Brainstorm tips

Sommige wenken voor een succesvolle brainstorm sessie zijn:

• Gebruik een ervaren facilitator. Extern?
• Stel één persoon aan om alle ideeën op te schrijven die tijdens de brainstormsessie naar voren komen.
• Gebruik een flip chart voor het maken van notities. Dit maakt latere studie alsmede een evaluatie aan het eind van de vergadering mogelijk.
• Identificeer het te bespreken onderwerp nauwkeurig (hou de sessie gericht op het probleem).
• Niet meer dan 8-10 mensen in één sessie. Als er meer deelnemers zijn, splits dan de brainstormsessie op en breng na afloop verslag uit aan elkaar.
• Één persoon schrijft alles op.
• Evalueer de ideeën in 2 stappen: A: bepaal de criteria. B: noteer de resultaten op de criteria.
• Aan het eind van de brainstormsessie moeten de stappen besproken worden die nodig zijn om de ideeën uit te voeren. Als dit ingewikkeld is, organiseer dan een andere brainstormsessie over hoe de ideeën uitgevoerd moeten worden.
• Bepaal duidelijk het probleem dat u wil oplossen, en stel vast welke criteria moeten worden gehanteerd.
• Zorg ervoor dat niemand tijdens de zitting ideeën bekritiseert of evalueert. Kritiek introduceert een risico-element voor groepsleden, wanneer zij een idee naar voren brengen. Dit verstikt de creativiteit en verlamt het vrije karakter van een goede brainstormsessie.
• Moedig een enthousiaste, niet-kritische houding aan onder de groepsleden.
• Probeer om iedereen ertoe te brengen om ideeën bij te dragen en te ontwikkelen, met inbegrip van de stilste leden van de groep.
• Laat mensen plezier beleven met de brainstormsessie.
• Moedig mensen aan om zoveel mogelijk ideeën naar voren te brengen. Zowel solide, praktische als gewaagde, onpraktische ideeën zijn welkom.
• Verwelkom creativiteit.
• Zorg ervoor dat geen enkele gedachtegang te lang wordt gevolgd.
• Moedig mensen aan om elkaars ideeën verder te ontwikkelen, of ideeën van anderen te gebruiken om nieuwe ideeën te creëren.

De doeltreffendheid van brainstorming

Hoewel brainstormsessies al meer dan 70 jaar en wereldwijd worden gebruikt, is de doeltreffendheid ervan voor het produceren van nieuwe ideeën betwistbaar. Brainstormsessies zijn het meest effectief om veel ideeën in korte tijd te produceren. Groepsprocessen zijn ook effectief om bestaande ideeën te evalueren. Maar (begaafde) individuen zijn naar wordt aangenomen beter in het creëren van originele ideeën en in het bedenken van ideeën met een hoge kwaliteit.
