브레인스토밍 (두뇌폭풍) 방법은 혁신 또는 개선을 위한 새로운 아이디어를 찾기 위하여 임시로 마련한 회의에서 주로 활용되는 반 구조적인 창조적인 그룹 활동이다. 문제와 그 해결방법에 대해 제안된 아이디어가 항상 유용한 대안이 아니더라도, 가능한 많은 아이디어를 제안하도록 참여한 구성원을 독려하도록 한다. 브레인스토밍을 하는 의도는, 그룹활동을 통해 참가자가 개별적일 때보다 더 높은 수준의 창의성(시너지 효과)을 얻고자 하는데 있다.

브레인스토밍 규칙

성공적인 브레인스토밍 회의를 위한 3가지 중요한 규칙:

1. 이상한 아이디어일지라도, 가능한 많은 아이디어를 제안하도록 참가자들을 독려한다(나쁜 아이디어는 없다).
2. 회의가 끝나기 전까지는, 제안한 아이디어에 대해 어떠한 판단도 내리지 않은다. 긍정적이든 부정적이든.
3. 각각의 아이디어를 갖고, 다양한 조합과 시도를 하도록 참가자들을 독려한다.

성공적인 브레인스토밍 회의를 위한 몇몇 힌트 :

• 경험있는 회의진행자의 활용. 필요시 외부인사.
• 1명을 지정하여 회의에서 제안된 모든 아이디를 기록한다.
• 메모를 할 수 있는 플립챠트를 준비한다. 이것은 회의의 끝부분에 학습 및 평가를 가능하게 해준다.
• 토론의 주제를 정확히 확인한다 (회의를 문제에 집중할 수 있도록 유지한다).
• 1개의 회의 참가자는 8-10명을 넘지 않도록 한다. 참가자가 더 많을 경우는, 회의그룹을 나누어 진행한 후에, 서로 공유하도록 한다.
• 1명은 모든 아이디어를 적는다.
• 2단계에서 모든 아이디어를 평가한다 : A: 기준을 정한다. B: 기준에 따라, 각각의 점수를 매긴다.
• 브레인스토밍 회의의 끝부분에서, 아이디어를 실행하기 위하여 필요로 하는 조치를 토론하도록 한다. 이것이 복잡한 경우에는, 아이디어를 실행하는 방법에 관한 다른 브레인스토밍 회의를 한다.
• 해결하고자 하는 문제를 명확하게 정의하고, 이를 충족시키는 기준을 준비한다.
• 회의중에는 아이디어에 대한 어떠한 비판이나 평가도 금지한다. 비판은 참가자들이 아이디어를 제안할 때 부정적으로 작용한다. 이것은 창의성을 막고, 좋은 브레인스토밍 회의를 위한 자유로운 운영을 방해한다.
• 참가자들이 열정적이고, 무비판적인 태도를 취하도록 독려한다.

• 참가자들로 하여금 브레인스토밍 회의가 재미를 느끼도록 한다.
• 가능한 한 많은 아이디어를 제안하도록 독려한다. 실용적이든 않든 모든 아이디어는 환영한다.
• 창의성은 환영한다.
• 참가자들이 너무 오랫동안 생각을 하지 않도록 한다.
• 다른 참가자들의 아이디어를 발전시키거나, 활용하여 새로운 아이디어를 제안하도록 독려한다.

브레인스토밍의 효과

브레인스토밍이 전세계적으로 70년 이상 사용되어온 방법이지만, 새로운 아이디어를 창안하는 효과에 대해서는 논란이 있다. 브레인스토밍은 짧은 시간내에 많은 아이디어를 생성하는데 가장 효과적이다. 또한 그룹 프로세스를 통해, 기존의 아이디어를 평가하는 것은 효과적이다. 그러나 (영리한) 개개인이 훌륭하고 원천적인 아이디어를 더 잘 창안한다고도 한다.
