Метод Six Thinking Hats (Шесть мыслящих шляп) Edward de Bono - модель, которую можно использовать для исследования различных перспектив на сложные ситуации или задачи. Рассмотрение явлений различными способами часто оказывается полезной идеей в формировании стратегии или сложных процессах принятия решений.
Метод STH организован для того, чтобы помочь личностям нацеленно исследовать разнообразие перспектив по вопросу, которые могут отличаться от той перспективы, которую человек применяет естественным образом. Нося определенную мыслящую шляпу, люди играют роли или применяют определенную перспективу. Например, кто-то мог бы сыграть адвоката дьявола, только для того чтобы спровоцировать обсуждение. Намерение метода адвоката дьявола в том, чтобы намеренно бросить вызов идее: критический подход, поиск недостатков.
Каждая шляпа носит название цвета, который мнемонически описывает некую перспективу. Например, метод адвоката дьявола представляет собой черную шляпу мышления.

Шляпы de Bono указывают как на эмоциональные состояния, так и на умонастроения (т.е., перспективы рассмотрения вопроса). Он отметил: «Эмоции являются естественной частью нашей способности мыслить, а не чем-то дополнительным, что мешает нашему мышлению» (1985, p27). Один стиль мышления (или шляпа) не обязательно «лучше», чем другие. Полноценная, сбалансированная группа признает потребность во всех шляпах для того, чтобы группа рассматривала все аспекты рассматриваемого вопроса.

В большинстве контекстов групп, люди склонны чувствовать ограниченномть с точки зрения необходимости последовательно применять определенную перспективу (оптимистическую, пессимистическую, объективную и т.д.). Это ограничивает способы и степень, в которой каждый из членов и, таким образом, группа в целом могут исследовать вопрос. С методом Шесть мыслящих шляп, ни один из членов не ограничивается одиночной перспективой в процессе мышления. Шляпы представляют собой категории поведения мышления, а не самих людей. Цель шляп состоит в том, чтобы направлять мышление, а не классифицировать мыслительный процесс или индивида. Действительно, нося шляпу, которая отличается от привычной, человек может придти к различным новым идеям. Ношение шляпы означает намеренное применение перспективы, отличной от привычной для человека. Важно, чтобы все члены группы знали это. Член группы должен ясно определить цвет своей шляпы. Ношение ясно определенной шляпы разделяет эго и исполнение. Метод 6 шляп полезен даже для процесса мышления отдельного человека.

Шляпы могут быть использованы в некоторой структурированной последовательности в зависимости от сущности вопроса. Далее представленна примерная повестка дня для типичного семинара 6 шляп:
Раздел 1: Представьте обстоятельства вопроса (белая шляпа) Раздел 2: Представьте идеи о том, как следует его разрешить (зеленая шляпа) Раздел 3: Оцените преимущества идей - перечислите преимущества (желтая шляпа), перечислите недостатки (черная шляпа) Раздел 4: Осведомитесь об инстинктивном чувстве каждого члена в отношении альтернатив (красная ) Раздел 5: Сделайте заключение и закройте совещание (голубая шляпа)
