Charismatic Leadership Differentiated
Elaine C. Bishop, Business Consultant, United States, Member
Charisma... Is the distinguishing element of charismatic leadership. Charisma is contagious because of the charm content. Charming people can be very influential. Consequently, charismatic leaders are influential because charisma elicts emotional responses from followers. Emotions are strong behavioral motivators. However, there is one caveat: there are light-side charismatic leaders and dark-side charismatic leaders.

Charismatic Leadership

The best leaders I believe are those who often use integrity, confidence, honesty and good old common sense with what ever they do and how ever they do it. We often more then most, need or rely on others to take the lead for what ever reason, I think it part of the human condition. Some are born leaders, some get thrown in to leadership but not all people can lead. Not a lot of people want to take the lead in most cases due to the fact of responsibility or ownership of what could potentially happen if the outcomes are not so positive. A great (charismatic) leader will weigh all options available to them that will not only benefit themselves but all others included. I feel there need to be more people like this.

Recognizing Charismatic Leadership

It absolutely exists in some people. As much as I have supported leadership development over the years, I believe this is something that can not be taught. In reality, it is hard to define but you know it when you see it!

Charismatic Leadership is Risky for Followers

Charismatic leadership is often really bad stuff because style trumps substance in the leader's message. All of the murderous tyrants in recent history, including Hitler, Mussolini, Mao, et al., were charismatic leaders.
Whenever I'm around a charismatic leader in the corporate arena, I keep my hand on my wallet.
