Problems with Expectancy Theory. Disadvantages

Two major issues with Expectancy Theory is that it breaks down if employees do not believe in their capability or in the reward.
Other leadership, motivation skills and theories are needed first in such situation.

Assumption of Expectancy Theory

Indeed if employees are highly demotivated and there are not goals, no rewards, and no expected outcomes, like in the case of learned helplessness, as a manager you first have to take action to spark some initial level of motivation and work from there.
Until that is done, expectancy theory is still valid, because it helps to understand why nothing much will happen and it is likely that the employee will not be motivated to do anything.
