Cascading Effect Leading to Turnaround Situation
Agree with the above comment to some extent. However, it can't happen that multiple business units or departments start under-performing at the same time or within short intervals.
It could be some kind of a cascading effect
which results into "collective under performance". Signs of under performance may go unnoticed by the management.
A 'tipping point
' is reached where no matter how hard one tries, the original status quo cannot be maintained with the existing strategies, tools, processes. And as rightly pointed out, it becomes too late to breath life back.
Hence I sincerely feel that turnaround management should kick in at an early stage at a business unit / department level
(which is easy to implement) rather than at an organizational level before it reaches a point-of-no-return stage.
