Factors for Assembling Project Teams

Could anyone suggest some ideas around the sort of factors that both an organisation and project manager would consider when assembling a project team? Thanks...

Factors for Assembling Project Teams

Have you considered utilising Belbin team roles?

Assembling a Project Team: Start with Clarity of Relationships and Purpose. Then Roles

I would start by exploring the relationships:
- The relationship of the team in its systemic environment - which establishes the purpose of the team in the organisation and the connections that it needs to maintain + who may maintain them on behalf of the team.
- Then the relationship of the members of the teams and how they are in relationships towards outcomes.
Most management consultants will aim to contain the roles based on what "best practice" says and then do a RACI. The typical result is individualisms and blame - "I have done my job, they haven't". It is best to start reflecting on how people are in relationship towards the desired outcome and explore how they put themselves in collaboration first.
Once you are clear about relationships, roles will emerge in the team and a deeper meaning of the roles.
Belbin indeed offers some good ideas on that like "Completer Finisher", "Peace Maker", etc.
It is also useful to establish what duties may be missing or poorly covered, and which should be shared. For instance, "Quality" should generally be a shared construct. If it relies on one person only, it will result in tensions.
Creating a team alliance and frequent check-ins is also a way to establish the relationship of the team.
All those things are part of team coaching. It takes a huge amount of work to become a team coach.
ICF produces some competencies of team coaching, which have been much researched.
I would highly recommend that you seek the support of a team coach and create a run of continuous sessions with them + have them help you run check-ins.
It is not something that you will successfully improvise from the tips that you may read online.
