The Quaternary Sector of the Economy
Advances in Technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) blur the line between physical and digital activities and change individuals' livelihoods globally. Thus, the Quaternary Sector (QS) is emerging and disturbing most of the major industries in every country.
The QS or "Quaternary Industry" is the economic activity based on the intellectual or knowledge-based economy. The foundation of this activity is creation and it includes work that conceives, creates, interprets, organizes, directs, and transmits, aided and supported by scientific and technical knowledge.
The economic viewpoint of the QS is that it's an additional exposition of the tertiary sector. Meaning that the economic activities that make up the QS also belong to the tertiary activities.
Examples of Quaternary Industries or Sectors: consultancy, financial planning, designing, information technology, research and development.
Eexamples of products and services are artificial intelligence, big data, robotics, internet of things, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, nanotechnology, and quantum computing.
Other activities that belong to this sector are the entertainment industry, media, culture, and government.
