Is a profit pool the same as a profit centre?

Profit Pool versus Profit Center

Good question!
Nope, they're NOT the same. A profit center is an organizational unit or department that is measured (judged) by both its expenses and its margins (profits).
A profit pool is not an organizational entity, but rather a strategic focus area.
