Competitive Advantage and Monopolies

In any monopolistic environment, innovation tends to shrink and, eventually brings about the downfall of the system. The most obvious example of this is the old USSR and, it appears that China will, in the medium term, follow the same route. Lack of innovation results from a lack of lateral thinking, both of which are thought to be abhorrent in monopolistic environments. In business, the best weapon against lateral thinking and innovation is the term "Submit a memo".
