Global Managers in MNCs Should Occasionally Check Local Managers
Managing from a far, that in a nutshell is what is required from MNCs. However, even with regional mangers and country managers, I believe the top management should seek to make random visits to their host countries' offices in order to ensure that what the company represents with regard to HR, Management, Compensation and Benefits, Social Activities, Marketing and general business, is what is indeed happening.
Many local managers abuse the fact that they are never micro managed by their senior counterparts. Often times not much of what the company represents is reflected in the daily activities of these managers. Sometimes unethical behavior becomes normal and inducted in the mores of the organization due to the fact that the local managers are allowed to run a mill of the organization and they can send reports with many untruths and half-truths to their seniors without question, as it is believed that the fact that these local managers are given the fiduciary responsibility and therefore they need not be questioned.
