Short and Long Term Motivation and Demotivation

My believe is that all major thoughts or theories of motivation can help to improve the employee's morale (and then efficiency) as a short term consideration.
But there will be negative results when the catalyst is gone and the difficulty is to sustain the good results in the longer term.
