5S in Material Management

It's very important to manage materials for the proper flow of materials and for not blocking of cash.
One of the most important and widely used is a Japanese technique called the 5S Framework.
- STRAIGHTEN: Make the arrangement of flows in such a way that all be in a line. Thus there is no waste of time and now even try to eliminate the wastes.
- SORT: Keep only what is necessary and eliminate whatever is not. The things and tools that are in priority must be kept, while the rest must be discarded.
- SHINE: Make sure that everything is maintained neat and clean. Clean the floor and machines and keep all things at the right place after every shift, so that all is ready for the next shift.
- STANDARDIZE: Standardize the process and requirements. This could help in the interchangeability of the items. Once the operation flow is standardized, the material flow will be much easier and losses will be automatically reduced.
- SUSTAIN: This is a very important step as you need to make sure that all that is applied in earlier stages is being carried out properly and there is no backsliding or loops. If so correct them at earliest.
Note that the 5S will not only keep the work environment clean, but will also reduce material losses and hence increase efficiency.
