Expand Succession Planning to Include Key Skills/Knowledge
Alan Buckingham, Australia
I would expand the definition of succession planning to include more than just covering top-level management. I believe that a good succession plan covers all employees in positions that require skills or knowledge that are not easily replaceable. This could include certain middle management and technical positions.

Succession Planning is also Risk Management
Barrett W. Horne, Consultant, Canada
I'm agreeing with Alan's point about succession management needing to embrace more than top-level management.
Effective succession management is about risk management--identifying and having a strategy and plan around all those positions where the loss of the incumbent (for whatever reason) would entail a serious problem for the organization, whether because of the loss of critical corporate knowledge, hard-to-replace technical expertise, or etc.
Effective succession management includes a process to identify all such 'high-risk' positions and a strategy to mitigate the risks.

Indeed Alan and Barett. I adjusted our summary to reflect both of your valid builds. Thank you.

Succession Planning

Hi Barrett, s very great point - I agree with the risk element. Some organizations today do not see it in that perspective, the challenge is that most companies in developing countries are now exploring succession, because most companies are not fully set up to be able to do this. So I need your help on how to implement effective succession planning - Template for now will do for me - John Parker.

@Yanney John Parker: Hi John Parker. You can find some quite useful material from the Australian Public Service website here. Good luck!
