Objectives of Management Development
The main objective of management development is to improve the competency of a person in order to improve the overall performance of the organization. The "competency" is consisting of education, skills and attitude.
- Education: aquiring basic knowledge, mostly theoritical
- Skills: using the acquired knowledge practically to achieve the desired results.
- Attitude: developing an intention for achievement.
The skills and attitide can be developed through training.
The overall process of improving the competency is called development.

The focus of MD is on the entire organization as it is supposed to improve the sort of leadership provided by the upper echelons of organizations.
It is also important for us to understand that MD attempts to enhance the capacity of those involved so that they can perform well now and be ready for future responsibilities.

I would like to add some perspective to this definition.
The main objective of management development is to have, at anytime, the quantity and quality of management that an organization needs.
Apart from improving skills of individuals, it involves personnel planning, recruitment, selection, appraisal and very good HR professionals.
