What differences do customers perceive between personal relationships and business relationships? Do they even think of their interactions with businesses as 'relationships'?

Business Relationships are Considered Relationships
In my opinion relationships are unique and differ from industry to industry and from individual to individual. Some industries demand more formal ways of doing business allowing formal contracts to regulate the relationships. Others are more informal and rely more on principles such as trust, honesty, etc.
In an attempt to answer your question I would say that yes, they do think of business interactions as relationships.
