Lateral Thinking - Sometimes Suppressed
R Hallagan, Management Consultant, United States
It is true there are many people stuck in traditional ways of thinking and it can be frustrating. Oftentimes, they are holding on to what they know since its what has worked for them in the past. When it is no longer working, fear can accompany the risk of failure, losing control of the situation - and perhaps one's position.
The root of this "old school problem"
can almost always be tied to the lack of trust or appreciation for the rank and file
. And, as hard as it is to teach old dogs new tricks, we should try because it's much easier than the alternative if it works. If this fails, the organization will suffer more employee turnover and risk losing customers to its competitors until or unless they wake up.
