Lateral Thinking is Creative Thinking
Mohamed Imthiaz
Edward De Bono introduced lateral thinking for problem solving situations at a time when the world was practicing traditional problem solving tools. Now after so many years of practice, we have gone through several metamorphoses into this field and have numerous new tactics of solving problems. Creative thinking and out of the box thinking are terms coined with lateral thinking.

Hello Mohamed. De Bono specifically invented lateral thinking and lateral thinking tools not for problem solving situations, but because the human brain (both in 1967 and now) is a self-organising information system and therefore not naturally creative. There is a need for the human brain as a dynamic complex adaptive system to be perturbated (shocked) in some way in order for new ideas to emerge.
This can happen in all kinds of ways - just listening to someone talking for example.. Hence we can all be lateral thinkers.
The point with lateral thinking tools however is that De Bono designed them so we can deliberately shock our brain at anytime whether we feel creative or not.. This is what I call "creativity-on-demand" De Bono in fact is very clear that serious creativity (his other term for lateral thinking) should NOT just be associated with problem solving as so many creative thinking tools are - like brainstorming and cps - creative problem solving.
