Kraljic Model for Similar Product Comparison

🔥 Is the Kraljic model useful for the same kind of product such as server A, B and C?
I think the Kraljic model is NOT useful for this kind of detailed analysis but one of my colleagues is persistent to do so...

I think you are both right. It depends on the circumstances. Perhaps it is a linguistic misunderstanding.
Take your example of server A, B, or C.
We might assume that they all belong to the "Strategic Items" category. Because if they brake or fail it may take a long time to have it repaired, or buy a new one, install all the software and restore all data. The consequences can be very serious if it is a server for a production environment or perhaps a critical web server in an e-Commerce company.
But if two servers A and B are critical items as described above, but the third server C that has to be acquired is to be used for a relatively not-critical, standard application and there are many alternatives should it fail, then the purchase of that server would be in another Kraljic category than the other 2.
