How to Clear Obstacles (Kotter)? Ideas

The 8-Step Change Model sets out the eight key phases of any major change effort, arguing that neglecting any of the steps can be enough for the whole initiative to fail. By paying close attention to these 8 steps, you can avoid many frequently made mistakes in changing organizations and avoid wasting a lot of money and effort. According to John Kotter, for an (organizational) change to happen, the fifth step is to (empower people to) clear obstacles or barriers. It is crucial to remove any processes, systems, structures, or even people that are blocking the strategic change. Although this may seem harsh, failing to do so may jeopardize the entire firm. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... Some ideas to clearing obstacles are:
  • Appoint change leaders whose main responsibilities are to 'make the change happen' (see ).
  • Adapt organizational structure, procedures, job descriptions, bonus systems, etc. to be in line with the vision.
