Sustainable Business Approach after Years of JIT

I had a very interesting conversation with someone who has become recently Chief Sustainability Officer of a top 10 pharma company (after years as global head of engineering there).
He is using a Sustainable Business Approach to cover 100s of millions of dollars of inefficiency.
And this after years of applying JIT lean manufacturing processes to his business.
How can this be? Does anyone know why a sustainability lens can have such an impact?

Sustainability versus Just-in-time

Maybe there is no difference in impact between the two strategies. Maybe the difference is only in the focus.
If just-in-time is properly applied, then there is a continuous circle of improvement. However if a just-in-time is just a one-time-implementation of a system without the power of improvement, then there will remain a tremendous mountain of opportunities.
But the same can happen wih a sustainability approach.
The strenght of a strategy or philosophy is mostly delivered by the people and only parly by the theory.
