Principles of Personal and Business Ethics
Jaap de Jonge, Editor, Netherlands
Personal ethics refers to the ethics that an individual identifies with in respect to people and situations that they deal with in everyday life.
Professional ethics (business ethics) refers to the ethics that an individual must adhere to in respect of their interactions and business dealings in their professional life.
I agree that most general principles of ethics that help us solve ethical dilemmas in everyday life also provide proper guidance in business and law:
1. Do No Harm
2. Respect Others
3. Be Fair, Honest
4. Care for Others
5. Improve Things
However, in some cases, personal and professional ethics may clash and cause a moral conflict. For example, a manager may personally believe that a corporate policy or guideline that he is required to enforce is wrong.
