The structure of an organization could be contingent upon the time in its development and the various stages. The type of organization also comes into play with the structure.
We endorse the Flat of Concentric structure in most cases.
The concentric structure of management is more of a relationship and respect model that values constructive communications and trust in helping the organization grow and achieve or exceed stated outcomes.
In many organizations there is a quiet storm brewing with the mindset and desires of the new age employee or as we refer to them as the "Millennials". They seek to make contributions to their professional or work environment and the traditional top-down hierarchical structure does not fit their presence in most work settings.

The Concentric Organization in Application

Traditional Hierarchical Organizations require layer upon layer of approval for much to happen in a progressive setting. As information works it's way up to the proper level of review and approval time works against improvement of a specific modification or eventual change or improvement in "How" some aspect of the business operations could suffer.
Expecting the person or persons managing the governance or structure to understand the details of why a particular adjustment could improve a particular deliverable is organizational ignorance. The person and/or team closest to the customer or product experiences the quality features of the deliverables more directly than those in the various governance positions.
That's why the concentric structure trusts, endorses and empowers those closest to the customer and/or product to make decisions to improve the quality of service in the moment.
This requires EVERYONE from the historical highest level to the lowest level in an organization to embrace the purpose. 18-9-2019
 

 
Is a Concentric Organization the Same as a Flat Organization?

@Gregory Johnson: I can relate to the issues of hierarchical organizations as you are describing them (decision having to be made high up the hierarchy and taking a longtime). But is the concentric organization then just another word for a flat organization?
I suspect not, but then what sets the concentric organization apart from a generic flat one? 19-9-2019
