Since 2010, healthcare institutions around the world are progressively adopting competency-based specialty training, which is a way of empowering trainees with relevant skill-sets in the form of so called EPAs (Entrustable Professional Activities). An (EPA) is a key task in a field of work (e.g., a medical specialty) that an individual trainee can be trusted to perform independently. To get credentialed for a particular EPA, the individual needs to demonstrate sufficient competence in performing the task by ascending up to predefined "milestones". A milestone, by comparison, is an observable marker of an individual's ability. These milestones are very useful in ensuring that the trainee is empowered in 5 grades of decreasing supervision from "Totally supervised practice" to "Totally independent practice".
